Ireland has voted, and nobody knows the result. Until this afternoon. But why does it take so long to get first impressions via exit polls?Only yesterday afternoon German press agency DPA for example reported that there will be some first information from exit polls on Irish television and radio when polling stations close at 10 pm local time.

But nothing. I couldn’t find any any information from Irish media at that time except stories that turnout was around 40%.

So, why are there no exit polls? Is it a general tradition not to have them Ireland or are the results just too unpredictable even with exit polls?

Happy waiting…

  1. There was some sort of rule in place that no campaigners or media were allowed within 50m of polling stations, and hence no exit polls were conducted.

The first results from the count look really dire.
